Your adventure starts at Trailer World of Colorado. We don’t just sell you a camper; we’re here to make sure you actually get out there and use it! We know that for our Denver-area neighbors, the hardest part of the weekend isn’t the drive, it’s deciding where to set up camp.
To help you hit the road with confidence, we’ve rounded up the best RV campgrounds near Denver. Whether you’re towing a massive fifth-wheel or navigating a nimble truck camper, these spots are Colorado-approved.
Mountain Campgrounds (Under 1 Hour from Denver)
Echo Lake Campground (Mt. Evans)
- Best For: Truck Campers and Small Travel Trailers.
- The Vibe: High-altitude serenity. Nestled at 10,600 feet, this is a “Truck Camper Paradise.” Because of the tight turns and smaller sites, it’s perfect for those with a smaller footprint looking to escape the city heat.
- Note: No hookups here, bring your solar panels or ensure your batteries are topped off at our service department before you go.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park
- Best For: Families and Full Hookups.
- The Vibe: Lush aspen groves and well-maintained loops. This is a premier spot for families who want the “mountain feel” without sacrificing the comforts of home. Many sites offer 30/50 amp service, making it a breeze for newer RVers.
Lakeside Camping (1–2 Hours from Denver)
Chatfield State Park
- Best For: Large RVs and Big Rigs.
- The Vibe: Located right in Littleton, Chatfield is the gold standard for convenience. The paved pads are massive and level, perfect for those 40-foot toy haulers.
- Pro Tip: “We see a lot of first-time owners start here to get a feel for their new rig,” says our team. With full hookups and plenty of room to maneuver, it’s stress-free camping at its finest.
Boyd Lake State Park
- Best For: Water Sports Enthusiasts.
- The Vibe: If you’ve got a boat or jet skis trailing behind your camper, Boyd Lake is your destination. The campground features modern restrooms and pull-through sites that make setup a breeze after a long day on the water.
Desert & Plains Camping (Under 2 Hours)
Mueller State Park
- Best For: Wildlife Viewing.
- The Vibe: Located near Divide, CO, Mueller offers stunning views of Pikes Peak. It’s a haven for elk and mule deer. The campsites are spaced out, giving you that private, tucked-away feeling while still offering electric hookups.
Eleven Mile State Park
- Best For: Fishing and Boondocking.
- The Vibe: Wide-open skies and world-class trout fishing. Eleven Mile offers a great mix of electric sites and more rugged, “dry camping” spots for those who want to test their RV’s self-containment.
Free Camping Options (BLM & National Forest)
Kenosha Pass
- Best For: Dispersed Camping for Self-Contained RVs.
- The Vibe: If you want to bypass the reservation system and the fees, Kenosha Pass offers incredible dispersed camping.
- What to Know: You’ll need to be fully self-contained (water, power, and waste). Ensure your holding tanks are in tip-top shape before heading out into the wild!
What to Know Before You Go
- Reservations: Colorado state parks now require reservations, often months in advance. Check CPW frequently for cancellations.
- Seasonal Considerations: Mountain passes can see snow as late as June and as early as September. Always check your tire pressure and heating systems.
- Size Matters: Always check the “Max Vehicle Length” on reservation sites. A 35-foot trailer won’t fit in a 25-foot Echo Lake spot!
Matching Your RV to the Campground
